Over 20,000 Tutsi were killed in the former prefecture of Gikongoro (present-day Nyamagabe District). The killings then spread to other regions. The massacre was described as Genocide by the international press, foreign witnesses and independent researchers. Additionally, 200,000 Tutsi fleed Rwanda.
